John T. Rue, 93, of Jefferson, died on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at home.
Born on July 16, 1923, in Fort Atkinson, to Oscar and Elsie (Hauser) Rue, he married Geraldine Baumgard on April 20, 1943, in Savannah, Georgia.
He was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson, serving as the president of the congregation three times and also was a member of St. John's Lutheran School Board. John was very involved in a number of other boards and committees in the church.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946 and saw action in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a long-time member of Endl-Gruennert Congressional Medal of Honor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3589 of Jefferson and Reinhardt-Windl American Legion Post 164 of Jefferson.
He was employed by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department from 1951 to 1985 and was Jefferson County's first Detective and headed the Detective Division until 1985.
Surviving are his loving wife for the past 73 years, Geraldine Rue of Jefferson; four children, Sharon (Ron) Auerbach of Rome, Jon (Patrice) Rue of Mount Airy, Maryland and Greg (Roberta) Rue and Tom (Mindi) Rue, both of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Lisa Auerbach and David, Michael, Paul and Alexis Rue; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Nancy (Bill) Haberman of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Dick, Bob and Don Rue; and two grandchildren, Michelle and Craig Auerbach.
Funeral services will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, with the Rev. Matt Krenke officiating.
Burial, with Military Honors, will take place in Union Cemetery in Jefferson.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday after 10 a.m. until the time of services.
The family requests memorials be made to the church.
