Donald R. Nelson, 58 of Jefferson, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 6, 2018.
Donald was born on March 10, 1960 in Milwaukee, WI the son of Richard and Carol (Biedenbender) Nelson. The family moved to Sullivan in 1969 and he is a 1978 graduate of Jefferson High School. Donald worked as a Rough Carpenter for many years and most recently worked at Opportunities Inc. as a Materials Handler. Donald was a trustworthy and reliable employee and was appreciated by many at Opportunities. In his youth, he was an experienced Boy Scout and spent many years in the outdoors - enjoying fishing trips to the Boundary Waters and hunting trips to Door County. Donald was a long-time member of the Rome Fire Dept. He was a man who put others before himself and was always generous with his time and talents. His family called him the “Mother Hen” and was the first to arrive when his family needed help. Donald was a lifelong bachelor and was very close with his family. His character, generosity, and love of family will be remembered fondly.
He is survived by: his Parents Richard (Karen) Nelson of Sullivan; Siblings David (Michelle) Nelson of East Troy, Alan (Michelle) Calhoun of Chandler, AZ, Robert (Terry) Nelson of Jefferson, and Terra Calhoun of Milwaukee. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Donald is preceded in death by his mother, Brother Fred and Sister Tamara.
Memorials in Donald’s honor to the Rome Fire Dept. would be appreciated.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00PM on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Olsen-Gibson Funeral Home with Rev. Amy Waelchli of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fort Atkinson presiding. Visitation will be from 3:00PM until the time of service at the funeral home. He will be buried in the Rome City Cemetery at a later date.
