Kathryn D. “Kay” Kehoe, 95, of Johnson Creek, WI (formerly a resident of Batavia, IL), died on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the home of her son, Robert Kehoe, Jr.
Kathryn was born in Bergen, NY on May 12, 1922, the daughter of John and Jane (McCormick) Darby. In November of 1943 Kathryn became a Registered Professional Nurse and on January 26, 1946 was united in marriage with Robert L. Kehoe of Rochester, NY in her home town of LeRoy, NY. In December of 1950 Robert and Kathryn moved to Batavia. Kathryn endured the unfortunate loss of her husband through illness in 1960, and staying in Batavia, she raised their six children, Mary, Jane, John, Robert Jr., Bernard and Dan.
Kathryn was well known for her kindness and strength and this was demonstrated clearly after losing her beloved husband when she packed her young family into their new Rambler station wagon and set off on a pilgrimage to Montreal and Quebec, Canada. Through her loving and steady guidance the Kehoe children have grown through many challenges and have remained a very close family.
In 1967 Kathryn returned to nursing and within a few years became the head nurse of the Medical/Surgical unit at Aurora’s Mercy Center Hospital, from which she retired in 1987. Kathryn was a very active member of Holy Cross Parish in Batavia and served the community in other ways throughout her life. She was a board member and chair of an annual drive for the local American Cancer Society. She also volunteered with developmentally challenged children at Valley View, and at the homeless shelter, Hesed House. In 1996 she was honored to be named the Woman of the Year for the Rockford Diocese. After retiring, Kathryn dedicated her time and energy to her growing family, and community, and enjoyed treasured, loving relationships with all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kathryn is survived by: her children Jane (Steve) Lewis of New York, NY, John of Sault Sainte Marie, MI, Robert (Michelle) Kehoe of Johnson Creek, WI, Bernard (Valerie) Kehoe of St. Charles, IL, Dan (Mary) Kehoe of Gurnee, IL; son-in-law James Griffin; grandchildren Tim Griffin, Sean Lewis, Robert (Ashley), Brian, Nicholas, Nathan, Angie, Michael (Kacey), Darby, Katie, and Erin Kehoe; and great-grandchildren Judah, Edgeron, Samara, Falan, Ryder, and Penelope.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Mary Kehoe Griffin, grandsons Andrew Kehoe, Kevin Griffin, and her six siblings.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathryn’s honor to “PA Able” (for the benefit of Nathan C. Kehoe, Kathryn’s disabled grandson) may be made by sending the donation to a family member.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Holy Cross Catholic Church (2300 Main St., Batavia, IL 60510) with Fr. Jared Twenty presiding. Visitation will be on Monday from 9:30AM until the time of service at the church. She will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery of Geneva, IL following the mass.
