Mary C. Serns, 93, of Jefferson, died on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Sylvan Crossings of Jefferson.
Born August 20, 1924, in Watertown to Leo and Catherine (Mueller) Neis, Mary was married to Robert (Bob) Serns on July 19, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jefferson.
In 1958, Mary and Bob opened a vacation resort, Serns Birch Haven, outside Woodruff which they ran until 1968. The family spent their summers at the resort and lived in Jefferson the rest of the year.
Mary was secretary at East Elementary School and later at Jefferson County Head Start. She volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul, the Jefferson Animal Shelter, and delivered meals on wheels with her husband. Mary was an avid bridge player and was still playing at the Senior Center until May of this year. She loved watching sports of all kinds but especially the Badgers, Packers and her beloved Chicago Cubs. She treasured time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary is survived by: her Children Jim Serns of Nevis MN, Joan (Steve) Good of Leland, NC; Daughter-in-Law Sue Serns of St. Louis, MO, Sister-in-Law Helen Seifert of Jefferson; 5 Grandchildren Mike (Christy) Serns, Kate (Justin) Bell, Rob (Emily) Good, Stacey (Andy) East, Ann Marie Good; 7 great grandchildren; and a number of nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Son Steven Serns, an infant Daughter Ruth Ann, and a Brother Robert Neis.
A private Christian burial will take place at a later date at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery of Jefferson with the Rev. Thomas Coyle presiding.
Mary’s family wishes to express a sincere thanks to the staff of Sylvan Crossings and Rainbow Hospice for their kindness and wonderful care during Mary’s stay. Memorials to Rainbow Hospice Care and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church would be greatly appreciated.
